Dead Sea Unknown Facts

Despite its name, the Dead Sea is actually a salty lake, with shores that are the lowest dry land on earth. The Dead Sea is a popular Mediterranean tourist attraction because of its many interesting traits and rich history.
  1. History

    • More than 825 scrolls were found in the caves that surround the Dead Sea. These contain both biblical and non-biblical writings in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek.

    Composition

    • The Dead Sea is 8.6 times saltier than the ocean, and is filled with minerals that naturally occur in our bodies, such as calcium, iodine, saline, potassium and bromide.

    Benefits

    • The Dead Sea acts as a natural spa and is known to have healing powers for acne, psoriasis, hives, cellulite, dry skin, dandruff and other skin problems, as well as muscle and bone aches.

    Abnormalities

    • A strange phenomenon is known to occur in the Dead Sea in which asphalt rises to the surface of the water.

    Life

    • Because of the excessive salt concentration, animal and plant life is unable to survive in the Dead Sea, hence its name.
