Dead Sea Vacations

Visitors from all over the world vacation at the Dead Sea to take a float in its medicinal waters which have proven benefits for the skin and body. The Dead Sea lies 1,312 feet below sea level (the lowest point on Earth) and the waters here have ten times the salt concentration of typical sea water. As a result swimmers float better than corks in the waters which remain warm throughout the majority of the year.
  1. Day Trips

    • Slathering on Dead Sea mud is both therapeutic and fun

A mere 15 miles from Jerusalem at its closest point, it's possible to take a day trip vacation to the Dead Sea either by car or bus. The closest Dead Sea beaches to Jerusalem are clustered around the village of Qumrun along Rte. 90. Kalia Beach, Biankini Beach and Mineral Beach are three of the most accessible; each provides basic services like fresh water showers and free mineral mud that guests can dig out from the shore and rub all over. These beaches tend to be a bit rocky and can reach scorching temperatures in the summer, so make sure to bring a pair of cheap sandals that won't be damaged too badly by salt and mud. Visitors looking for a more complete spa package should head further south.

    Resorts and Spas

    • Ein Bokek

The major spa resorts along the Dead Sea are all clustered around Ein Bokek, located on the south western shore in Israel. Approximately seventy miles from Jerusalem, Ein Bokek is the spot to find hot springs, mineral baths, spa treatments and luxury hotels. While hotel guests will have access to the beaches and swimming pools for no extra charge, spa treatments, sulfur baths, and massages will cost extra, and should normally be booked in advance. Different hotels typically offer packages and combinations depending on the season; it's best to check with individual hotels first before booking to see if there are any deals. Visitors only passing through Ein Bokek can still enjoy spa treatments, but may pay more than guests at individual hotels.

    Ein Gedi

    • Travelers looking for a Dead Sea vacation that involves more than a simple day trip, but doesn't come with the relatively high cost of the resort spas further south in Ein Bokek, can visit Ein Gedi. Located halfway down the Dead Sea's western shore, Ein Gedi is a natural spring and national park with waterfalls and freshwater pools. The nearby Ein Gedi Kibbutz provides a package with lodging, two meals and unlimited access to the Ein Gedi spa (which offers basic services like massage and heated indoor pools).
