Vacation Spots in Jamaica

Jamaica is an island in the Carribean Sea that has many white-sand beaches, movie theaters, nightclubs, restaurants, bars and outdoor activities. Jamaica's most popular vacation spots include Kingston, Montego Bay and Negril.
  1. Montego Bay

    • Montego Bay, commonly referred to as "Mo Bay," is Jamaica's second largest city and the most modern in the Caribbean. It is located in Jamaica's northwestern hemisphere. Montego Bay offers duty-free shopping, craft markets and boutiques, which makes it the capital of Jamaican tourism. As for accommodations, most of the hotels are located on the 2.4 km coastline, providing a view overlooking the water. Due to its high tourism, Montego Bay has a wide selection of styles of hotels, such as older, well-established luxury hotels, all-inclusive stays and small, private places. Montego Bay is Jamaica's economic center as it has a thriving port. For beach lovers, Montego Bay has three main beaches: Walter Fletcher, Doctor's Cave, and Cornwall Beach, which is located just a few yards from the local Tourist Board Office. Also in Montego Bay is Rose Hall, which is a restored Great House situated on a sugar plantation. Every summer, Montego Bay hosts the famous reggage festival, Reggae Sumfest. Thousands of people from all over the world attend to enjoy the event and reggae music.

    Negril

    • Negril, located on the western tip of Jamaica, close to the coastline, allows travelers to take in sailing, jet-skiing, scuba diving, windsurfing, parasailing and deep-sea fishing. Negril has a very laid-back culture and is called the "Capital of Casual" because locals conduct business matters with the least bit of formality. Because of the easy-going, friendly atmosphere, Negril is considered a good place to meet and make friends with Jamaicans. Many of the nightclubs are situated along the Seven Mile Beach, which stretches for 11 km. Negril is known for its busy nightlife and parties. Restaurants outside the mega resorts are locally run and so are not the place for a fancy cuisine. Rick's Cafe, located at West Point, the most western part of Jamaica, is a famous spot to watch the sunset.

    Kingston

    • Kingston, Jamaica's capital and also the world's reggae capital, is a cosmopolitan city with about 750,000 residents. Kingston is on the southeast coast of Jamaica and is the country's government, economic and cultural center. Kingston has the largest natural harbor in the Caribbean and the seventh largest in the world, which makes it an industrial center. Kingston is home to the National Gallery, which has a colorful display of modern art, and Hope Botanical Gardens, which has a variety of trees and plants but is particularly famous for its orchids. Every Sunday a band plays at the Hope Botanical Gardens. On King Street you will find a crafts market, and at Caymanas Park there is a racetrack where every Wednesday, Saturday and any public holiday, you can bet on horses. Port Royal is also in Kingston; it was Jamaica's ancient capital city before it was submerged under the sea after an earthquake occurred in 1692. Port Royal was considered the "richest and wickedest city on earth" when under the ruling of Captain Morgan and his buccaneers. At the White Marl Arawak Museum are artifacts of the ancient culture of the Arawak Indians.
