Balinese dance typically take place in the evening hours and have five main categories.
Barong: a battle between good and evil
Legong: a strictly choreographed and traditional dance performed by young girls
Fire: a cleansing dance meant to remove the presence of demons, taking place over hot coals
Kecak: or Monkey Dance, a somewhat contrived spectacle created for a 1930's film set in Bali
Ramayana: an epic dance spread over a period of three to four days reenacting legendary Hindu scenes
Balinese Topeng, or masked drama, is a popular traditional dramatic style which portrays Bali's royal families as everyday people. Prembon dramas mix Topeng, operatic and other styles to create an all-encompassing spectacle of storytelling.
Sendratari Drama is a miming style and the newest of the Balinese dramas (developed in the 1960's).
