When was Japan founded?

The history of Japan as a country traditionally dates back to the establishment of the Yamato state in the 3rd century CE, although a number of settlements and cultures existed in the area long before this date. The Yamato state was founded by the legendary Emperor Jimmu, who is said to have ascended the throne in 660 BCE. This date, however, is not supported by historical evidence, and most historians believe that the Yamato state did not emerge until the 3rd century CE.
