Fred Hollows dedicated his life to making eye care accessible to
underserved communities. In 1992, he established the Fred Hollows
Foundation to continue his work after his passing. The foundation
focuses on preventing and treating blindness in remote areas,
particularly in the Asia-Pacific region, and continues to have a
significant impact on improving the lives of people around the world.
_Eye Camps and Surgical Outreach:_
Hollow and his team organized numerous eye camps and surgical
outreaches in remote areas of outback Australia. These camps
provided essential eye care services, including examinations, surgeries,
and the distribution of eyeglasses, to communities that lacked access to
regular eye care facilities. This model has since been replicated in
many other regions where eye care access is limited.
- Training of Local Eye Care Personnel:_
Recognizing the need for sustainable eye care solutions, Hollows helped train and support local eye care personnel in outback communities. He worked with Aboriginal health workers, nurses, and other healthcare providers to develop and implement eye care programs tailored to the unique needs and challenges of their regions.
_- Advocacy for Eye Care as a Human Right:_
Hollows passionately advocated for the recognition of eye care as a
fundamental human right. He fought against social and economic
barriers preventing people in underserved communities from
accessing quality eye care services. Through his advocacy efforts, he
helped raise awareness and mobilize resources to address avoidable
blindness in both Australia and globally.
- Collaboration and Partnerships:
Hollows believed in the power of collaboration and formed
partnerships with various organizations, governments, and
individuals. These collaborations allowed him to leverage resources
and expertise to create a greater impact. The success of his work
inspired others to join the fight against avoidable blindness.
