According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in the year ending December 2018, Australia received a record 9.3 million international visitors. This represented an increase of 4.3% compared to the previous year. The majority of visitors came from China (1.4 million), New Zealand (1.1 million), the United States (780,000), the United Kingdom (680,000), and Japan (490,000). Tourism is an important industry for Australia, contributing $60.8 billion to the economy in 2017-18.
