Why Did Britain Establish Colonies in Australia?
Primary Motivations
- Penal Colony (1788 onward) – Overcrowded British prisons and the loss of American colonies as convict destinations led to the First Fleet landing at Sydney Cove. Over 160,000 convicts were transported by 1868.
- Economic Opportunity – Fertile land, wool, gold (1850s), and later minerals attracted free settlers and investment.
- Strategic Naval Presence – A base in the South Pacific countered French and Dutch ambitions and protected trade routes to Asia.
- Scientific Exploration – Voyages by Cook, Flinders, and others mapped the continent, encouraging settlement.
These factors intertwined: the convict system provided labor for economic development, while strategic interests secured the colony against rivals.
