How Voting Works in Fiji: Registration, Polling, and Mandatory Turnout
Fiji uses a compulsory voting system for citizens aged 18+.
Process
- Register – Fijian Elections Office (FEO) or online; need valid photo ID (birth cert + photo ID, or passport).
- Receive voter card – Mailed or collected; lists assigned polling venue.
- Election day – Present voter card + photo ID at polling station (7 am–6 pm).
- Mark ballot – Secret; open-list proportional representation (vote for party + candidate).
- Deposit in box – Finger inked to prevent double voting.
Penalties
Non-voters without valid excuse face a fine (FJ$20–50) or community service. Exemptions: over 70, illness, absence from Fiji.
System Notes
- Single national constituency (51 seats).
- 5% threshold for party representation.
- Last general election: 14 Dec 2022; next due 2026.
