Australia is one of the world's most urbanized nations: ~90% of its 26 million people live in cities, overwhelmingly along the coastal fringe.
The Southeast Crescent—Sydney (5.3M), Melbourne (5.0M), Brisbane (2.6M), Adelaide (1.4M)—holds ~65% of the national population. Perth (2.2M) anchors the southwest; Hobart, Darwin, Canberra are smaller capitals.
The interior (~70% of land area) hosts <10% of people—mostly in mining towns (Mt Isa, Kalgoorlie, Roxby Downs), Indigenous communities, and pastoral stations. The Northern Territory and Western Australia are the least dense states.
Policy efforts (decentralization, NBN, regional visas) have barely dented this pattern.
