What Is an Australian Constitutional Referendum?

A referendum in Australia is a national vote to amend the Constitution. It does not elect or remove the Prime Minister. Process:

  1. Proposal passes both houses of Parliament (absolute majority).
  2. Put to voters within 2–6 months.
  3. Requires a "double majority": national majority YES + majority YES in a majority of states (at least 4 of 6).

The PM is chosen by the party/coalition with confidence in the House of Representatives; changes occur via elections or party leadership spills.
