Mount Kosciuszko: Australia's Highest, But Not "Big" Globally

Mount Kosciuszko (2,228 m / 7,310 ft) is the highest peak on the Australian mainland. It's the crown of the Snowy Mountains and a popular day hike (summer) or ski tour (winter).

However, "big" is relative:

  • It's not the highest in Oceania—Puncak Jaya (Carstensz Pyramid) in Indonesia (4,884 m) holds that title.
  • Globally, it's modest: Everest (8,849 m) is nearly 4x higher; hundreds of peaks exceed 7,000 m.
  • Even in Australia, Mawson Peak on Heard Island (2,745 m) is higher, though it's an external territory.

Kosciuszko's significance is national, not global. It's accessible, non-technical, and culturally iconic—named by Polish explorer Paweł Strzelecki after Tadeusz Kościuszko. For serious mountaineers, it's a checkbox; for Australians, it's a rite of passage.
