Canberra was made the capital of Australia because the Australian Federation wanted a neutral territory outside New South Wales and Victoria, the two largest populated states in Australia.

In 1908, Parliament held an international design competition that was eventually won by American architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin.
