The previous name of Taiwan was Formosa. The name "Formosa" was given to the island by Portuguese explorers in the 16th century. The Portuguese called the island "Ilha Formosa", meaning "beautiful island". The name Taiwan is thought to have originated from the word "Taouan", which was the name of a settlement in the southwestern part of the island.
