Which explorer discovered the Grand Canyon?

While Spanish explorers García López de Cárdenas may have been the first European to see the Grand Canyon in the 16th century, the Grand Canyon was first explored in more detail by Major John Wesley Powell in 1869. Powell led a daring expedition down the Colorado River through the canyon, becoming the first person to successfully navigate its treacherous rapids and documenting its geological wonders. Although Native Americans had previously lived in the area and were aware of the canyon's existence, Powell's expedition was crucial in bringing this natural wonder to the attention of the world and opening it up to further exploration and appreciation.
