Three Forest Regions Severely Impacted by Acid Rain

Acid precipitation (rain, snow, fog with pH <5.0) has devastated forests in industrialized regions. Three heavily affected areas:

1. Black Forest (Schwarzwald), Germany: Southwest Germany; conifer dieback (spruce, fir) from 1980s sulfur/nitrogen deposition; soils acidified, aluminum toxicity.
2. Adirondack Mountains, New York, USA: Northeast NY; lakes acidified (pH <5), fish kills (trout, salmon); red spruce decline at high elevations; soil calcium depletion.
3. Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee/North Carolina, USA: Southeast US; high-elevation spruce-fir forests damaged by acid cloud/fog deposition; nutrient leaching; visibility reduction.

Emissions controls (Clean Air Act, EU directives) have reduced deposition, but recovery is slow due to soil chemistry legacy.
