Who was the first explorer in Tasmania?
The first European to discover Tasmania (then known as Van Diemen's Land) was Abel Tasman, a Dutch explorer, on November 24, 1642. During his voyage of discovery, Tasman sailed along the southern and eastern coasts of the island and named it "Anthoonij van Diemenslandt", after Anthony van Diemen, the Governor of the Dutch East India Company.
