Why were brumbies introduced to Australia?

The introduction of brumbies to Australia was not intentional. Brumbies are descended from horses brought to Australia by European colonists in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Some of these horses escaped or were released into the wild, and they established feral populations that have persisted to this day.
