Alberta’s Graduated Driver Licensing: What You Need to Know at 16

Minimum Age and the GDL Pathway

In Alberta, you can start driving at 16 years old—but only through the province’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program, designed to phase in privileges as experience grows.

Stage 1: Class 7 Learner’s Licence (Age 14+)

  • Pass knowledge test and vision screening.
  • Must be accompanied by a fully licensed (Class 5 non-GDL) driver ≥18 years old.
  • Zero blood-alcohol; no driving midnight–5 a.m.; no more passengers than seatbelts.
  • Hold for minimum 1 year.

Stage 2: Class 5-GDL Probationary Licence (Age 16+)

  • Pass basic road test.
  • Zero blood-alcohol; no more passengers than seatbelts.
  • No supervising learners.
  • Hold for minimum 2 years (can be reduced to 1.5 with approved driver training).

Stage 3: Full Class 5 Licence

  • Pass advanced road test (highway, complex maneuvers).
  • All GDL restrictions lifted.

Key takeaway: At 16, you can drive solo—but only after a year as a learner and passing the basic road test. Full unrestricted licensing comes at earliest 18 (or 17.5 with training).
