Why Nova Scotians Are Called "Bluenosers"

The nickname "Bluenoser" for Nova Scotians originates from a War of 1812 naval encounter. In 1813, the Nova Scotian privateer schooner Bluenose swiftly sank the USS Boxer off the coast of Maine. The Americans, humiliated by the quick defeat, began calling Nova Scotians "Bluenosers" as an insult.

Over time, the term was reclaimed with pride. Today, it's a celebrated symbol of Nova Scotian identity—featured on the Canadian dime (the famous Bluenose schooner) and embraced by residents as a mark of resilience and maritime heritage.
