Why did the icelanders immigrate to Canada?

The main factor behind Icelandic immigration to Canada was economic. Beginning in the 1870s, Iceland experienced decades of economic depression in addition to a series of volcanic eruptions and poor weather for harvests, causing famine on many farms around the island.
