Who named Edmonton?

The city of Edmonton in Alberta, Canada, was named by the Hudson's Bay Company governor George Simpson. Simpson was on a tour of the company's trading posts in the West in 1820 when he came to the fort on the North Saskatchewan River. He wanted to establish a permanent settlement there and named it after Edmonton in Middlesex, England, because it was the nearest market town to his ancestral home at Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland.
