What is provincial rock?

Provincial rock or stone is a sedimentary rock primarily found in the south-central portion of the Canadian province of Ontario. It is a type of dolostone, which is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of the mineral dolomite. Provincial rock is composed of fine-grained dolomite crystals, which give it a smooth, even texture and a light brown to cream colour. It is a relatively soft rock, with a Mohs hardness of 3 to 4. Provincial rock is quarried for use as building stone, and is also used for making cement, lime, and aggregate.
