How to Transport a Motorcycle to Canada

There are two stages in transporting a motorcycle from the US to Canada: You need to first export the vehicle from the US, and then import it into Canada. More than one government agency is involved, so be sure to comply with all applicable rules and regulations. Otherwise, your motorcycle could be destroyed or re-exported out of Canada at your own cost.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the list of motorcycles admissible to Canada at the Transport Canada website. Call the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) at 1-888-848-8240 if you want to confirm that Canada will allow your motorcycle to enter.

    • 2

Contact the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office at the border where you plan to cross to find out their documentation requirements and hours of operation.

    • 3

Submit the required documentation to the U.S. customs office at least 72 hours before the export. Usually, you need to prepare the vehicle title documents, registration and sales receipts.

    • 4

Present the motorcycle to the U.S. Customs when crossing the border.

    • 5

Present the motorcycle and documents to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) at the border. CBSA will want to see your title documents, registration and proof of ownership.

    • 6

Complete the Vehicle Import Form-Form 1 that CBSA provides.

    • 7

Pay the non-refundable RIV fee using a credit card. You can also pay this later, when the motorcycle has entered Canada. You can do so online, via the RIV website; by mail, to RIV's head office; or in person, at the RIV Toronto office, RIV Pacific Highway office or at a Livingston International Inc. office.

    • 8

Bring the motorcycle to an RIV inspection center within 45 days of its entering Canada.

    • 9

If needed, modify your vehicle to comply with Canadian standards as indicated by the RIV inspection form. You will get a stamp on your Vehicle Import Form-Form 1. Keep the document for registration and licensing.

    • 10

Contact the licensing authority in your province or territory to license your motorcycle.
