Are There Cities in the Canadian Shield?

The Canadian Shield is a vast, ancient geological region covering ~50 % of Canada’s landmass. It is largely uninhabited wilderness—rock, forest, muskeg, and lakes. Permanent settlements are limited to small towns and mining/forestry communities (e.g., Yellowknife, Flin Flon, Thompson, Sept‑Îles), not major cities. The large urban centers listed in some sources (Sudbury, Winnipeg, Edmonton, etc.) lie on the Shield’s southern fringe or in adjacent sedimentary basins, not on the Shield proper.
