Why Is Alberta Named Alberta?

The Canadian province of Alberta was named in 1882 by Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald in honor of Princess Louise Caroline Alberta (1848–1939), the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria. Princess Louise was married to the Marquess of Lorne, who served as Governor General of Canada (1878–1883). The name was chosen when the District of Alberta was created within the Northwest Territories; it became a province in 1905.
