What was the colony in modern day Newfoundland called?

The colony that existed in Newfoundland was called Avalon. It was established in 1623 by Sir George Calvert and was the first English settlement on the island. Avalon was located on the southern coast of the island and included the communities of St. John's, Ferryland, and Renews. The colony struggled for various reasons, including harsh weather, conflicts with the French and Native Americans, and mismanagement, but it laid the foundation for the permanent English settlement of Newfoundland, Canada.
