Polk County, Florida is wedged between the metropolitan areas of Orlando and Tampa. More than a half million people reside in Polk County, many of them in the city of Lakeland or the county seat of Bartow. Two major international airports in Orlando and Tampa, as well as a regional airport in Lakeland, serve the population here. Residents of Polk County with plans that involve air travel have several options when it comes to choosing a departure point.

    • Tampa International Airport serves more than 16 million passengers per year, traveling to points all over the world. With approximately 250 departures per day, this is one of Florida's busiest airports. Several major airlines land and depart from Tampa International, including the airport's most frequent flyer, Southwest Airlines. Delta, US Airways, American, AirTran, Continental, Northwest, and United are also among the airlines servicing Tampa. The busy airport facility includes more than 20,000 parking spaces for passengers' cars, and features three runways. The airport also has more than a dozen restaurants and more than 20 specialty shops.

    Orlando International

    • Orlando International Airport, located just east of downtown Orlando, is one of the state's busiest airports. Its proximity to popular vacation destinations such as Universal Studios, SeaWorld, and Walt Disney World make this airport tourist-heavy and crowded during peak vacation seasons. The airport houses an entire Hyatt Hotel and is home to more than 30 restaurants and dozens of retail shops. A train connects the arrivals terminal with the main concourse to help make this large facility user-friendly. All the country's major airlines and many of the world's major airlines service Orlando International.

    Lakeland Linder

    • Lakeland Linder Regional Airport is a municipal facility in Polk County's largest city. This airport was originally the Lakeland Army Airfield that served as home to several squadrons of war planes, including B-17s, B-24s, and P-51 Mustangs. Today this modern facility is known as the home of the Sun 'n Fun Fly-In, an annual aviation extravaganza hosted by Lakeland Linder in the spring. The airport serves as the Central Florida hub for smaller aircraft that do not fly into either Tampa or Orlando. Lakeland Linder is also home to the Hilton Garden Inn of Lakeland, a 105-room hotel frequented by business travelers to the area as well as tourists wanting a midway point between the two larger cities.
