Toronto's Cultural Roots: British vs. French Influence

Toronto's institutions and dominant culture are predominantly British-derived. As the capital of Upper Canada (later Ontario), it was settled largely by British Loyalists and immigrants. English is the primary language; common law governs; the city's oldest universities, banks, and civic organizations trace to British founders.

French influence exists but is less pervasive: French is an official language of Canada, and Toronto has a Francophone community, French-language schools, and cultural centres. However, the British imprint remains stronger in governance, law, and everyday life.
