Where is Alta California?

Alta California (meaning "Upper California" in Spanish) was the name given by the Spanish Empire to the region now comprising the U.S. state of California. The Alta California region was defined as everything north of the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir mountains in Baja California. This means that the vast majority of the Baja California peninsula was not part of Alta California, except for a small area in the north.
