Canada America Border Crossing Requirements

Each year, according to Forbes, more than 12 million Americans visit Canada. U.S. travelers are subject to certain requirements to enter Canada.
  1. Proof of Identity

    • U.S. travelers entering Canada must show both proof of identity and citizenship, requiring a U.S. passport or passport card.

    Time Frame

    • Prior to June 1, 2009, other forms of identification were accepted to cross the American and Canadian border; after that date, U.S. Passports or passport cards became the requirement.

    Options

    • For expedited travel across the border, the NEXUS trusted traveler program grants a card to use for quick entry into Canada or the United States. The program requires an application and a fee; eligibility depends on the results of a background check.

    Restrictions

    • Americans with a criminal record must apply for a special permit to enter Canada. This also includes convictions for misdemeanor crimes and DWI (driving while intoxicated ) charges.

    Considerations

    • Those planning to stay in Canada for more than 180 days must apply for a Visa, according to the U.S. State Department. Travelers planning to work or attend a university in Canada must apply through the Canadian Embassy.
