Calgary Fire Pit Rules

Calgary is the largest city in the province of Alberta, Canada. The city is a frequent attraction for outdoor enthusiasts, including campers and backpackers. When in city limits, you must follow laws regarding the use of outdoor fire pits.
  1. Law

    • Regulations covering the use of fire pits in Calgary are set at the city level. The law dealing with fire pits is in Calgary's Community Standards Bylaw 5M2004.

    Containment

    • According to Calgary law, fire pits must be contained by a material that isn't flammable. You must build the pit in the bare ground or on top of a safe material, such as brick.

    Distance

    • Fire pits cannot be closer than six feet to a property line or structure. You can't put them under a tree or other flammable object.

    Size

    • You must keep the fire small. This is defined as a maximum of 3 feet in width and height.

    Supervision

    • You cannot leave a fire pit unattended. Fires must be out between 1 a.m. and 10 a.m.
