Air Travel Rules & Restrictions

Air travel rules and restrictions have evolved into a complicated subject, encompassing topics such as luggage restrictions, passenger behavior and ticketing guidelines. These rules and restrictions can also vary among air carriers as well as differ between domestic and international travel.
  1. Baggage

    • Baggage restrictions can differ between domestic and international flights.

Most airlines have adopted a common set of guidelines for passenger baggage. Carry-on baggage must not exceed a maximum size (L x W x H) of 45 inches and it must fit easily into the overhead bin. Checked baggage must be 62 inches or less and weigh no more than 50 lbs..

    Warning

    • Often referred to as "passengers of size," many large or overweight travelers run into confusing or conflicting rules in regard to how much room they are entitled. Passengers who do not fit comfortably into a single seat may be required to purchase a second seat or upgrade to a larger class seat. This policy differs widely among carriers and should be addressed prior to departure for clarification.

    Identification

    • Passports are a common form of identification.

Proper identification is required to purchase an airline ticket as well as to pass through airport security and board the aircraft. For U.S. citizens, proper identification must include the passenger's name (as shown on the ticket), date of birth, gender, expiration date and a tamper-resistant feature. Identification must be issued by the U.S. federal government or an individual state.
