Baffin Island Temperature

Baffin Island, the fifth-largest island in the world, is the largest island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, and is in the Canadian province of Nunavut. The island had a population of around 11,000 as of 2007.
  1. Geography and Climate

    • Because of its location along the Arctic Circle with prevailing northerly winds, Baffin Island is subject to severely cold temperatures for most of the year. Much of the island is in the Arctic tundra. Sea ice surrounds Baffin Island for much of the year.

    Spring

    • Average April temperatures in Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut, on the southern tip of Baffin Island, range from 5 below zero to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. In Dewer Lakes, in the center of the island, from 23 below to 16 below; in Longstaff Bluff, on the western side of the island, 23 below to 15 below; and in Clyde, on the eastern side of the island, 24 below to 14 below.

    Summer

    • Average July temperatures in Iqaluit range from 38 to 52 degrees Fahrenheit; in Dewer Lakes, 2 to 8 degrees; in Longstaff Bluff, 3 to 10; and in Clyde, zero to 8 degrees.

    Autumn

    • Average October temperatures in Iqaluit range from 18 to 29 degrees Fahrenheit; in Dewer Lakes, 14 below to 8 below; in Longstaff Bluff, 12 below to 6 below; and in Clyde, 10 below to 4 below.

    Winter

    • Average January temperatures in Iqaluit range from 22 below to 8 below; in Dewer Lakes, 31 below to 24 below; in Longstaff Bluff, 33 below to 24 below; and in Clyde, 32 below to 23 below.
