The southern portion of the island, known as St Maarten, is a member island of the Netherlands Antilles. This part of the island has a Dutch influence. The northern two-thirds of the island, known as St Martin, is a French territory with French influence. There is also a blending of the Dutch and French influences creating an exotic native heritage. St Martin-St Maarten is the smallest land mass in the world shared by two different nations. It is home to people from 90 different nations.
There are no borders evident between the Dutch and French portions of the island. There are just monuments and signs. A central mountain range has winding roads that go through the hills and small villages. Lagoons and pristine beaches abound. The Caribbean's largest lagoon is located on St Maarten. The lagoon is large enough for sailing and is home to many luxury yachts.
Vacationers and residents enjoy a variety of water activities including sailing, surfing, snorkeling and kayaking. Lessons are available for most activities. The island is also home to museums and art galleries. In the evening, visit the Dutch side of St Maarten for a wealth of casinos and nightclubs. On the French side of the island you will find sidewalk cafes, bars and a more cosmopolitan atmosphere.
