Niagara Falls, Ontario Information

The city of Niagara Falls is in southern Ontario, Canada, midway between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. A number of tourist businesses have sprung up around the famous falls. Visitors can spend time at a casino, a water park, botanical gardens, an amusement park, museums or wineries within a short distance of the city.
  1. History

    • The earliest white permanent settlers were Loyalists escaping from the rebellious American colonies before the Revolutionary War. The early community went through a number of name changes until 1881 when it became the Town of Niagara Falls.

    Geography

    • Niagara Falls, Ontario, lies across the Niagara River from the city of the same name in New York state. The Rainbow Bridge near the Falls connects the two cities to the south, and the northern connection is the Niagara Expressway.

    Significance

    • Besides having a number of vantage points from which to see both the American and the Horseshoe Falls, the city of Niagara Falls is called the "Honeymoon Capital of the World."

    Parks

    • Almost 80 public parks in the city offer a variety of activities, including 12 with toboggan hills, five with outdoor pools, 11 in wooded areas and two with boat ramps.

    Fireworks Viewing

    • The City of Niagara Falls publishes a schedule indicating times when firework displays are shown and the Falls are illuminated. The best viewing place is Queen Victoria Park.
