What is El Santo Nino?

El Santo Nino is a figurine depicting the Child Jesus, revered among Filipino Catholics. It is believed that the Santo Nino arrived with Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 as a gift to Queen Juana. When the Spanish attempted to retake Cebu from Rajah Tupas, the Santo Nino became a symbol of the Filipino resistance against the Spaniards and Christianity, ultimately being captured and burned.

As the Philippines is a predominantly Catholic nation, the Santo Nino has become a symbol of national identity and the Filipino people. The Santo Nino image is prominently featured in many Catholic parishes and churches throughout the country and holds a significant place in Filipino Catholicism.
