The United Arab Emirates (UAE) was formed in 1971 when seven emirates—Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, and Ras Al Khaimah—united into a federation.

4. 18th century: British signed treaties with local rulers, creating the Trucial States.
5. 1971: British withdrawal prompted the seven emirates to form the UAE.
