Sources of Underground Water in the UAE

The UAE relies on three main sources for groundwater and supply:

• Fossil (paleo) groundwater: Ancient rainfall (thousands of years ago) trapped in deep aquifers (e.g., Liwa, Al Ain). Non-renewable; being depleted rapidly.
• Desalinated seawater: ~42% of total supply. Major plants: Jebel Ali, Shuweihat, Taweelah (reverse osmosis & multi-stage flash). Energy-intensive.
• Treated wastewater (recycled): ~14% of supply. Advanced treatment (MBR, RO) produces water for irrigation, landscaping, district cooling, industry. Abu Dhabi's "TSE" network is extensive.

Strategy: Water Security Strategy 2036 aims to reduce demand, increase reuse, and develop strategic reserves. Agriculture consumes ~60% of groundwater.
