Origin of Jamaica's Name

Jamaica derives from the Taíno word Xaymaca, meaning "land of wood and water" or "land of springs." The Taíno were the island's indigenous inhabitants when Columbus arrived in 1492. The Spanish adapted the name to "Jamaica," which persisted after British colonization.
