Fishing in the West End Bahamas

The Bahamas is a country that is made up of 300 islands and cays. Since this country is fully surrounded by water, it is also frequented by anglers looking for the next big catch.
  1. Fishing in the West End

    • To the local Bahamians, the area known as "West End" refers to the western part of the island of New Providence. This is also an area where deep-water fishing can be done. When fishing in the West End from the shore, you can only use a fishing rod, or a fishing reel. It is illegal in the Bahamas to fish using spears or nets to catch any other type of fish.

    When to Fish

    • The best times to fish in the West End is during the warmer months of April to November. This is the time when there is less likely to be a hurricane in the region to disrupt the habitat of the crawfish, grouper or wahoo. Another thing about fishing in the West End Bahamas is in regards to using chemicals. The government does not allow fishing using chemicals, for example bleach, to be entered into the water to damage the marine life.

    Commercial Fishing

    • According to the Bahamas government, certain species such as conch and wahoo cannot be taken from the sea on a commercial basis by someone who is not a Bahamian national, and who does not possess a commercial fishing license. The government also restricts the amount of certain species of fish that can be transported out of the country--only 20 pounds of wahoo can be caught and transported home by foreign fishermen.
