Paseo del Rio—Spanish for "Passage of the River"—is the official name of San Antonio's iconic River Walk. This 2.5-mile (4 km) network of walkways along the San Antonio River winds through the heart of downtown, one story below street level.

History and Development

After a devastating 1921 flood, architect Robert Hugman envisioned a flood bypass channel with commercial development at river level. The Works Progress Administration built the initial 1939-1941 section. HemisFair '68 expanded it. Continuous extensions now connect museums, hotels, convention center, and the Pearl District.
