Where is French Polynesia?

French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of France located in the southern Pacific Ocean. It consists of 118 islands and atolls spread over an area of more than 1200 miles (1900 km) in the central and eastern parts of the South Pacific Ocean. The largest island in the group is Tahiti, on which the capital city, Papeete, is located.

The five archipelagos of French Polynesia are:

- Society Islands: includes Tahiti and Moorea

- Tuamotu Archipelago: includes over 80 atolls

- Marquesas Islands: includes 12 volcanic islands

- Australs Islands: includes Tubuai and Raivavae

- Gambier Islands: includes Mangareva and Taravai

French Polynesia is about midway between South America and Australia. Although there are no direct flights from Europe or the Americas, connections are available from several international hubs including Tahiti, Los Angeles, and Tokyo.
