Who colonized Bahrain?

The Portuguese were the first Europeans to colonize Bahrain, arriving in 1521 and establishing a fort at Bahrain Fort. The Portuguese were driven out by the Persians in 1602, who in turn were driven out by the Omanis in 1783. The Omanis ruled Bahrain until the 19th century, when it became a British protectorate. In 1971, Bahrain gained independence and became a member of the United Nations.
