How did the European came to Jamaica?

Christopher Columbus' Arrival:

- Christopher Columbus, under the patronage of the Spanish monarchy, was one of the first Europeans to arrive in Jamaica.

- In 1492, during his first voyage to the Americas, Columbus reached an island he named "Santiago." This island is believed to be present-day Jamaica. He claimed it for the Spanish crown.

Spanish Colonization:

- The Spanish established their presence in Jamaica and used it as a base for expeditions and exploration in the region.

- The indigenous population (the Taíno and Arawak people) suffered during the colonial period due to diseases, oppression, and enslavement by the Spanish colonists.

British Seizure:

- In 1655, an English expeditionary force led by Admiral William Penn and General Robert Venables successfully invaded Jamaica, capturing it from the Spanish.

- Jamaica became a British possession, becoming a major stronghold for England in the Caribbean.

Expansion of Enslavement:

- The British planters established sugar plantations in Jamaica and heavily relied on the labor of enslaved Africans brought from West Africa through the transatlantic slave trade.

- The enslavement of African people and the plantation system became central to Jamaica's economy during the colonial period.

Abolition of Slavery:

- Following the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade in 1807 and the Slavery Abolition Act passed by the British Parliament in 1833, slavery was ended in Jamaica.

- The post-emancipation period in Jamaica brought significant change to the socio-economic dynamics of the island.
