How did Belize get its name?

There are multiple theories about how Belize got its name. One theory is that it comes from the Mayan word "beliz", which means muddy water referencing the Belize River. There is also evidence to suggest that the river was named by European explorers when the term was first recorded by Spaniards in the 16th century. They wrote Bellise or Balis.

Another theory is that the name comes from the French word balise, meaning "marker buoy", which was used to mark the entrance to the Belize River. Some people believe the name comes from the Spanish word 'Palisada' which means a place of many sticks or trees which would correlate to the abundance of Logwood trees in the region.

The English form Belize is first attested in 1677, and the country eventually became known by that name.
