As time went on, these cultures began to merge with one another, and new civilizations began to emerge. Among these civilizations were the Inca, who ruled Ecuador from the 15th to the 16th centuries. The Inca were responsible for building many of the roads and buildings that can still be seen in Ecuador today.
After the Inca, Ecuador was ruled by the Spanish for over 300 years. The Spanish introduced many of the customs and traditions that are still practiced in Ecuador today, such as Catholicism. Ecuador eventually gained its independence from Spain in 1822.
