What was the result when berbers crossed into Spain?
When the Berbers crossed into the Strait of Gibraltar from North Africa into Spain in 711 AD, it resulted in the beginning of the Umayyad conquest of Hispania. This process was facilitated by the political instability in the Iberian Peninsula at the time, which allowed the Berbers and their Muslim allies to take control of much of the region over a period of several years. The Visigothic kingdom that ruled Hispania at the time experienced internal conflicts, with rival factions seeking support from outside sources. The Berber leader, Tariq ibn Ziyad, took advantage of these circumstances and, in 711, led a force of around 7,000 Berber and Arab troops across the strait. He defeated the Visigothic king, Rodrigo, in the Battle of Guadalete, and with this victory, the Muslims established a stronghold in the Iberian Peninsula.
