Children Activities in St. Barts

St. Barts is a french speaking resort community set on a volcanic island in the Caribbean. Saint Barthélemy was first settled by France in 1648 and is known commonly as St. Bart, St. Barts, St. Barth or St. Barths. Located in the French West Indies, St. Barts is only 15 miles from St. Maarten, a popular destination in its own right. St. Barts is considered to be a safe place to travel with children, and while this upscale location does not have many child-friendly facilities or child-centered activities, there is still plenty for children to see and do in St. Barts.
  1. Festivals and Parades

    • Children may enjoy watching the Carnival School Parade that is held to mark the last day of school before vacation in March, where children parade in the streets of Gustavia, St Barts. Mardi Gras parade also occurs in March, allowing children to take in a parade filled with culture and colorful costumes. In August, the Festival of Gustavia is held with dragnet fishing contests, dances and parties. On August 24th, the day of the island's patron saint St. Barthélémy, church bells ring throughout St. Barts, boats are blessed, and there are regattas, fireworks and a public ball. Feast of St Louis is celebrated in the village of Corossol, with a fishing festival, petanque, belote, dancing and fireworks. Fete du Vent is in August in Lorient, holding dragnet fishing contests, dancing, lottery and fireworks. Regattas are held at various times throughout the year, mostly without fixed dates where children can watch the colorful sail boats and yachts race.

    Horseback Riding

    • Horseback riding is available on St Barts by Le Galop des Iles at the Ranch des Flamands. The Ranch des Flamands is located in Flamands in the northwest portion of the island. This is a rough drive along a poorly developed road. There is a riding ring for dressage available, as well as guided rides that follow footpaths along the ridge of the island and then down to Flamands beach. There are also a number of ponies for smaller children to ride.

    Sailing

    • Take the children out sailing for the day to create a fun-filled sea adventure. Here they can experience the tropical winds, fish and be kids away from the sophisticated resort site. Rent a charter or head out on a half-day or full-day cruise from one of the many services located in St. Barts. Most services also have sunset tours available, where your children can experience the beauty of the island sunset from the water. You can choose from single-hull or multi-hull vessels, or some services offer speedboat tours as well.

    Deep Sea Fishing and Snorkelling

    • You can rent a vessel and crew for half-day, full-day or for longer trips, then head out on a deep sea adventure with your children. Companies often provide refreshments on-board and fishing equipment is available. Select a company who also provides snorkeling, and your older children can enjoy taking a swim with colorful tropical fish in the clear blue waters off the shores of St. Barts. Combine your activities, or head out on separate day trips. A day of snorkeling might take you to a variety of islands and beaches, where you can enjoy music, punch and sunbathing.
