Fredericksburg Children's Activities

Fredericksburg, Virginia, is a city in the northern part of Virginia that is known for its history and outdoor attractions. In December 1862, Union and Confederate soldiers fought a critical Civil War battle in Fredericksburg. Along with historic attractions, there are a number of outdoor and indoor attractions in Fredericksburg, such as wineries, specialty shops, golf courses, art galleries and parks. Fredericksburg also features historical, artistic and recreational activities for children and their families.

    • The Riverside Center has children's and dinner theaters with shows and meals that are appropriate for kids over 3 years old. The dinner theater at the facility presents Broadway shows for diners while the children's theater has performances of children's stories.

    Ghost Tours

    • The Ghosts of Fredericksburg Tours features costumed guides that take people past buildings in Fredericksburg that are said to be haunted, including a tavern that is allegedly haunted by a former owner and a building where a woman supposedly killed herself. And of course the ghosts of the Civil War and other conflicts that took place here.

    Bowling Alleys

    • Liberty Lanes at Massaponax is a 48-lane alley that features open bowling nights on Fridays and Saturdays. It also has pool tables, dart boards, a snack bar, an arcade, an ice cream parlor and banquet rooms for birthday parties.

    Sports Facilities

    • The Paragon Training Center offers gymnastics, cheerleading, dance, karate, kickboxing and art classes for kids. On Friday through Sunday, it has open gym nights, where community kids can come in and use the rock wall and trampolines at the facility for a fee.

    Reservoirs

    • The Motts Run Reservoir recreation area features a 160-acre reservoir where children and their families can go canoeing, kayaking, fishing and boating. In the recreation area, they can go hiking or bird watching, set up a picnic or rent canoes.

    Zoos and Farms

    • A 645-acre farm that was constructed in the 1760s, the Belvedere Plantation is open from the end of September until November, as of February 2010. The farm features a corn maze, a pumpkin patch area, hayrides, bonfires, a petting zoo, a barn with swinging ropes, small tractors for kids, a pumpkin slide and pig races.

      The Bug Box is a zoo that features insects and other animals from different parts of the world. Animals at the zoo include a snake, turtles, frogs and toads, crabs, tarantulas, spiders, Madagascar hissing cockroaches and millipedes. For groups, the zoo puts on bug shows.

      The Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center has exhibits of artifacts from Fredericksburg, Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George County and Caroline County. The museum also features permanent exhibits on the contributions of Fredericksburg-area residents during major wars, the Rappahannock River's role in Fredericksburg's development and currency used in the area during different time periods.
